Nerve Diseases

To ensure high-quality healthcare services to all patients, our outpatient team works with utmost enthusiasm and dedication with patients, and their families to provide a patient-centered health service.

Outpatient clinics covers: brain diseases, spinal cord diseases, peripheral nerves which require a comprehensive evaluation and regular care.

Our consultants provide diagnostic evaluation and consultations to treat neurobehavioral and memory disorders, neuromuscular diseases, cardiovascular and movement disorders, headaches, seizures, sleep disorders (obstructive sleep apnea – insomnia), brain tumors, headaches, and Alzheimer’s

Neurophysiology Diagnostic Laboratory

Neurophysiology is primarily an investigative (diagnostic) discipline that uses computers, electrical, magnetic, and electronic means to record the brain’s function, spinal cord, spinal cord roots, peripheral nerves, and muscles to diagnose functional disorders of the nervous system.

Using technologies include:

  • EEG.
  • Electromyography.
  • Nerve conduction study.
  • Monitoring during operations.
  • Evoked potential.

Monitoring during operations:

t is used for monitoring during surgical procedures to reduce the incidence of neurological diseases during surgical treatments. This monitoring aims to identify changes in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve function before hard-to-repair damage occurs.

It is also effective in positioning anatomical structures, including peripheral nerves and the sensorimotor cortex, guiding surgeons during autopsies. Surgical procedures using this technique include scoliosis surgery, carotid endarterectomy, and brain resection surgery.

Stroke Program

A stroke is the result of a circulatory disorder in the brain. Symptoms can range from paralysis, sensory disturbances, swallowing and speech disorders, and impairment of cognitive abilities. A stroke is always an emergency and has to be treated immediately. This finding is based on the experience that all improvement measures within the first 3 hours (preferably in the first hour) have the best effect. Following acute treatment, lost skills can be partially or fully recovered in a specialized rehabilitation facility.

Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in Kentucky. Getting treatment as soon as a stroke occurs can make a huge difference in survival and recovery.

Our stroke program is a key part of ASH Neurosciences center. There is a dedicated, inpatient stroke unit with the most advanced stroke service is staffed full-time by our talented vascular neurologists. Leading-edge treatments for ischemic stroke that we can offer include intravenous thrombolysis, intra-arterial thrombolysis

Stroke team formed by one Consultant cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgeon, Four Consultant Neurologists and one Consultant interventional radiologist can efficiently handle such top emergencies.

Time is Brain!” is a direct way of conveying that stroke is a top medical emergency. It simply means that the more time passes before a stroke patient receives a definitive treatment, the worst the repercussions will be. But it also means that if the stroke is treated immediately, brain damage will be minimized.

Epilepsy Clinic

The Epilepsy Clinic at ASH is focused on helping you gain control over your seizure disorder. Our doctors have experience in managing myriad of seizure disorders, with expertise in the latest seizure medications and vagal nerve stimulation to treat epilepsy. Our goal is “no seizures, no side effects,” Adult Epilepsy: Sunday 16:00 – 20:30 Dr. Saber A. Rahman Adult Epilepsy: Sunday 16:00 – 20:30 Dr. Mahmoud Al Hajji Pediatric Epilepsy: Sunday 16:00 – 20:30 Dr. Hussein Al Hajji

What is epilepsy: It is a disorder in the cerebral cortex cells, that leads to loss of consciousness in most cases, with seizures in one or more of the body limbs, the origin of these convulsions is related to abnormal and excessive epileptic discharges in certain brain region.

Diagnosis:

  • Clinical data to determine the type and causes of epilepsy
  • EEG to determine the location, severity, and type of epilepsy
  • Radiological investigation, especially MRI, helps to identify tumors and congenital defects that lead to epilepsy, and there are advanced types of radiology tools that help to determine the Epilepsy-focus for pre-epilepsy surgery.

Treatment:

Epilepsy has many treatment methods:

If the cause is known, epilepsy and seizures could be cured

Drug- therapy (medications) is available to all ages and women during pregnancy, or patients with other epilepsy-related diseases.

Interventional treatment, such as (vague nerve stimulation VNS) that helps to control epileptic seizures.

Surgical treatment, in brain tumor cases or structural changes in a part of the brain, whether acquired or hereditary

Diet therapy (ketogenic diet)

Removing the epileptic-focus surgically (epilepsy surgery)

How to deal with epileptic patient?

During seizures you shall know the right way to deal with the epileptic Attack:

  • Do not resist the patient, and do not try to prevent muscle movements even if they are violent.
  • Place him in a safe place, preferably on the ground.
  • Do not attempt to place objects or liquids in the patient’s mouth or between his teeth.
  • Place him on his side
  • Release the belts and release of buttons
  • Make sure that he is breathing properly
  • Keep him away from any source of danger (such as fire, vehicle traffic, presence in the pool or high surfaces)
  • Call the ambulance immediately
  • Stay with the patient until he regains consciousness fully

AS an epileptic patient … What should you do!

  • Record the epileptic seizures and ask those around you about the form of epilepsy that occurred.
  • Take your medications regularly and do not change the times or type of medication without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not expose yourself to dangerous places or drive any vehicle until medical permission given to you.
  • Contact your doctor in case of pregnancy for women or if you are going to do surgery.

Head immediately to the ER if any of those happened:

  • Frequent seizures
  • If the patient did not regain his consciousness within 5 to 10 minutes after the seizure
  • Frequent seizures lasting more than 5 minutes.
  • Seizures complications such as fractures, scratches, burn… Etc.
  • Recurrent seizures even with proper intake of medications
  • Side effects of epilepsy drugs.
  • Epilepsy patient should be treated as a normal person, in order to avoid the psychological, social and academic drawbacks that the epileptic patient may suffer more than the disease itself
  • Epilepsy is not transmitted or infectious diseases. On the contrary, they have natural intelligence and can engage in school, daily activities, sports and travel.

(There are special precautions for each type of epilepsy you should ask your doctor about.)

  • A treatment program developed after discussion and long dialogue with the patient, consisting of a treatment plan that uses a drug approach and another that uses psychotherapy (through a program of cognitive-behavioral therapy or psychoanalysis).
  • An integrated team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. In addition, a visit program to monitor the progress of treatment is usually every 6 months.

Migraine Program

Migraine is one of the most common diseases that afflict millions of people in the world. Headache affects daily behavior and reduces his productivity at work.

The causes of migraines differ, and the treatment methods differ. There are many headaches, such as migraines, cluster headaches, tension headaches, headaches caused by structural problems such as bleeding, vascular diseases, and tumors, all of which we treat at Almoosa Specialist Hospital, specifically Migraine.

People with Migraine may have the following symptoms:

Diagnosis

The Migraine Program at Almoosa Specialist Hospital provides accurate diagnosis and comprehensive care for treating various types of acute and chronic headaches and provides health care that meets the expectations that every patient aspires to and hopes to get the care and attention they deserve. The diagnosis is made by examining the personal history of each patient’s condition, as well as through a physical examination, and with the use of a set of tests that exclude other causes that may be the cause of headaches, and a group of different procedures, including laboratories, x-rays, and neurophysiology, to ensure the diagnosis Correct triggers for headaches.

When registering a patient in the headache program, the neurologist evaluates each patient’s condition and makes sure that structural diseases such as tumors, vascular diseases, and others do not cause the headache.

Treatment

The treatment plan is also prepared per the patient’s treatment and type of headache, including treatment with a neurosurgeon referral. If the origin of the headache is physical, such as benign tumors or cancers, treatment can be planned with medication.
